Privacy Policy

Pocket Pinyin · Last updated November 7, 2026

Pocket Pinyin is made by Dion Software, LLC. The app doesn’t collect any data. There’s no account, no server of the developer’s, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking, and no third-party code (SDKs) in the app.

Where your data is

Your sets, words, imported decks and their audio, your study history and your settings are stored on your device, in the app’s own storage.

If your device is signed in to iCloud, Pocket Pinyin keeps a copy of them in your private iCloud storage, so your iPhone, iPad and Mac show the same library. This uses Apple’s iCloud: the data sits in your iCloud account, the developer can’t see it, and it isn’t sent anywhere else. Apple’s privacy policy covers iCloud. Some settings, like how many new words you learn each day, sync the same way; settings such as sound, haptics, appearance and reminders stay on each device. You can turn off iCloud for Pocket Pinyin in your device’s iCloud settings.

Apple Intelligence

When you make a set with Apple Intelligence, the topic you type is processed on your device by Apple’s on-device model. Pocket Pinyin doesn’t send it to the developer or to any third party.

Audio

Words without a recording are read aloud by the speech voice built into your device. Nothing is sent to a server.

Notifications

If you turn on the daily reminder, it’s scheduled on your device. No notification service or server is involved.

Purchases

Pocket Pinyin Plus is bought through Apple. The developer never sees your payment details or your Apple Account. The app asks the App Store on your device whether Plus is active, and nothing else is sent anywhere.

Files you import

Decks you open in Pocket Pinyin are read on your device and copied into the app. They aren’t uploaded.

Backups

If you back up your device with iCloud Backup or to a computer, the app’s data is included in that backup like any other app’s. Those backups are yours, and Apple’s privacy policy covers them.

Deleting your data

Delete a word, lesson or set in the app to remove it, on every device and in iCloud. Your study history (the days you studied and how you answered) is kept so your streak and progress stay correct. Deleting the app removes what it stored on that device; your library stays in iCloud for your other devices. To remove it from iCloud too, delete Pocket Pinyin’s data in your iCloud storage settings.

Children

Pocket Pinyin isn’t directed at children under 13, and it collects no data from anyone, including children.

This website

This website, pocketpinyin.app, is separate from the app, and nothing from the app ever reaches it. It’s hosted by Vercel and counts page views with Vercel Web Analytics. For each page you open, that records the time, the page and the page that linked to it, an approximate country, region and city, and your browser, operating system and device type. Like any web request, it receives your IP address. Vercel says page views are recorded anonymously and aren’t tied to you or to your IP address.

Vercel says Web Analytics uses no third-party cookies. It recognizes a visit by a hash made from the request and discards it after 24 hours. The website doesn’t load Vercel Web Analytics at all when your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track. Read Vercel’s Web Analytics privacy documentation for the details.

If you choose Light or Dark appearance at the bottom of a page, that choice is kept in your browser and never sent anywhere.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date.
